Senegal Team Returns
17 04 2011The Sen
egal team returned home on Tuesday after a very successful and rewarding mission. This trip was as much about encouraging and building relationships with the people who are doing the daily work in the Pikine neighborhood as it was about accomplishing projects. Some of the team taught English to the teens of the community while another contingent worked hard building the vocational school despite physically demanding conditions. In fact, on the last work day the thermometer topped out at 130 degrees! -but it was a dry heat, Ha! The medical team evaluated and treated nearly 200 patients and had the opportunity to teach in the local hospital. The women in our group led a powerful woman’s retreat for Senegalese Christians in the region. There were many stories of personal breakthroughs and spiritual growth that came out of this event. One of the highlights of the trip for the team was separating into small groups and spending time in the homes of families in the Yoonu Njup church. It was a special opportunity for us to hear stories of their own faith journeys and to share a little of our lives with them.

Off to Senegal Again!
2 04 2011
The team is leaving today for Senegal. This is an 11 person team with a 3 fold purpose: 1) We will be meeting and getting to know the church families affiliated with the Yoonu Njup Community Center with the goal of encouraging them and establishing connections to small groups in our partner church (South Shore Community Church in Bridgewater and Brockton, MA). The women will also be speaking at a woman’s retreat. 2) We will also engage in community outreach by staffing a small medical clinic and treating people in the community. We will also be connecting with the community through an English class that we will run. 3) Finally, part of the team will be building the Vocational school that will train poor, marginalized boys who would not have access to this kind of education otherwise.

Mission Trip coming up in April
17 01 2011
We’re currently putting together a mission team to travel to Senegal April 2-10, 2011. If you’re interested in going please fill out the application and send to our volunteer coordinator at: Volunteer. This team will be largely construction oriented with a small medical and teaching component.
We will be involved in building a vocational school that will be geared toward housing and training the poor and marginalized boys in the poorest section of St. Louis, Senegal. A compassionate heart and willingness to serve are the only prerequisites.
We will also assist and come alongside the medical personal in the medical clinic at the Yoonu Njup Community Center. They have very little opportunity for training; we hope to evaluate and treat patients side by side and learn from each other. We are looking for nurses, doctors and others with medical training that are willing to serve.
In addition there is opportunity for interaction and teaching in the girls’ school. We need someone who is willing to just “hang out” and perhaps teach on life skills, nutrition, or whatever you would like. Just our presence and love is an encouragement to these girls.
If your interested in just exploring the idea of being part of this team, but not ready to apply -stay tuned- we will have an organizational meeting soon, date to be announced.
Check out our new web site: www.shoretoshore.org for additional ways you can get involved here at home.

Ken Returns!
7 12 2010Listen to what
the Davis’ (our missionary partners in Senegal) had to say about Ken’s recent visit:
“Just wanted to let you know that Ken was a great blessing to us. We had a great week. He was able to see lots of different construction sites at different stages and asked lots of questions. It was great to have him crunch numbers with Brian over the architect plans. He has a great program that graphically presented the building project. He also did some very important relationship things with the Senegalese by spending the afternoon at our church yendoo (picnic like hang out) … and visiting a church family with us …” -Michelle
Ken’s visit has expanded SSMN’s involvement and insight into the proposed vocational training center in St. Louis, Senegal. This project will be divided into several phases: the initial phase is groundbreaking (perimeter wall, septic system, foundations, and such), next is housing (director’s residence and housing for Talibé or street boys), next for shops and storefronts (2 workshops, 1 store to sell products made in the shops, 1 hair salon, 1 medical consultation room) and finally, classrooms (4 classrooms, 1 conference room, 1 library, 1 office).
Stay tuned for more info as it develops. –John
